Elizabeth Palmer Peabody: Record of a School

Record of a School

Description

Elizabeth Palmer Peabody's Record of a School is a collection of notes on Bronson Alcott's dialogues with his students at the Temple School of Boston. It was first published in 1835. In 1836, after half of the first printing of 1,000 was destroyed by fire, a second edition, with a new preface, was printed. The book received considerable attention in the New York press, which was unusual considering that it was a small volume about a tiny school. By 1838, the school was shut down after Bronson Alcott had shocked Boston with a subsequent publication about the school. However, the importance of the Temple School, Bronson Alcott, and his methods has been acknowledged by generations of educators, and the book is the remaining record of the school. Contains an informative introduction by Megan Marshall, author of The Peabody Sisters.

Building the Future : Big Teaming for Audacious Innovation

Description

Building the Future Machiavelli famously wrote, There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. That's what this book is about - innovation far more audacious than a new way to find a restaurant or a smart phone you can wear on your wrist. Amy C. Edmondson and Susan Salter Reynolds explore large - scale systemic innovation that calls for "big teaming": intense collaboration between professions and industries with completely different mindsets. This demands leadership combining an expansive vision with deliberative incremental action - not an easy balance. To explore the kind of leadership required to build the future we need, Edmondson and Reynolds tell the story of Living PlanIT. This award - winning "smart city" start - up was launched with a breathtakingly ambitious goal: creating a showcase high - tech city from scratch to pilot its software - quite literally setting out to build the future. This meant a joint effort spanning a truly disparate group of software entrepreneurs, real estate developers, city government officials, architects, construction companies, and technology corporations. By taking a close look at the work, norms, and values in each of these professional domains, we gain new insight into why teaming across fields is so challenging. And we get to know Living PlanIT's leaders, following them and their partners through cycles of hope, exhaustion, disillusionment, pragmatism, and renewal. There are powerful lessons here for anyone, in any industry, seeking to drive audacious innovation.

Patrice Bertail,Paul Doukhan,Philippe Soulier: Dependence in Probability and Statistics

Dependence in Probability and Statistics

Description

This book gives an account of recent developments in the field of probability and statistics for dependent data. It covers a wide range of topics from Markov chain theory and weak dependence with an emphasis on some recent developments on dynamical systems, to strong dependence in times series and random fields. There is a section on statistical estimation problems and specific applications. The book is written as a succession of papers by field specialists, alternating general surveys, mostly at a level accessible to graduate students in probability and statistics, and more general research papers mainly suitable to researchers in the field.

Immanuel Velikovsky: Ages in Chaos II: Ramses II and His Time

Ages in Chaos II: Ramses II and His Time

Description

In his book "Ramses II and His Time," Immanuel Velikovsky continues his reconstruction of ancient history. This volume covers the best-known of old Egypt's pharaohs, Ramses II. Velikovsky points out how little we know about this famous ruler. His revised chronology places Ramses II firmly into the 7th century B.C. and not, as we have been led to believe, hundreds of years earlier in the 13th century B.C.. Ramses II's adversary was thus none other than Nebuchadnezzar. We are made privy to fascinating personal details about this great Chaldean ruler, whose autobiography Velikovsky was able to locate. As in the first part of the series "Ages in Chaos," this volume unearths a string of erroneous theories and dismisses as pure fantasy several other aspects of the traditional written history concerning the ancient world. We learn, for example, that the so-called Hittite Empire is an historical invention and, in another critical paragraph, Velikovsky leads us the to the proper understanding of the Bronze- and Iron Ages. In the extensive supplement, Velikovsky deals with the age-calculating method of radiocarbon dating and its surprising connections to his own theories.

Arnie, the Doughnut

Description

At first glance, Arnie looks like an average doughnut - round, cakey, with a hole in the middle, iced, and sprinkled. He was made by one of the best bakeries in town, and admittedly his sprinkles are candy coloured. Still, a doughnut is just a doughnut, right? WRONG! Not if Arnie has anything to say about it. And, for a doughnut, he sure seems to have an awful lot to say. Arnie has bigger plans in store for himself! Here's the bestselling picture book that launched the chapter book series: Adventures of Arnie the Doughnut.

Annaliese Porter was only eight years old when she wrote The Outback. She has captured the Australian outback in all its moods in this moving bush ballad about the country's vast interior. The Outback, illustrated by respected Aboriginal artist Bronwyn Bancroft, depicts recognisable Australian landscapes and animals such as Uluru, dingoes, cockatoos, snakes and goannas. A stunning picture book destined to become an Australian classic. Happiness today is not just a possibility or an option but a requirement and a duty. To fail to be happy is to fail utterly. Happiness has become a religion--one whose smiley-faced god looks down in rebuke upon everyone who hasn't yet attained the blessed state of perpetual euphoria. How has a liberating principle of the Enlightenment--the right to pursue happiness--become the unavoidable and burdensome responsibility to be happy? How did we become unhappy about not Last Man Standing: Tales from Tinseltown free pdf being happy--and what might we do to escape this predicament? In Perpetual Euphoria, Pascal Bruckner takes up these questions with all his unconventional wit, force, and brilliance, arguing that we might be happier if we simply abandoned our mad pursuit of happiness. Gripped by the twin illusions that we are responsible for being happy or unhappy and that happiness can be produced by effort, many of us are now martyring ourselves--sacrificing our time, fortunes, health, and peace of mind--in the hope of entering an earthly paradise. Much better, Bruckner argues, would be to accept that happiness is an unbidden and fragile gift that arrives only by grace and luck.

He is no typical guide - he avoids the "sights" in favour of a remote Romanesque church, a cobweb-ridden chapel, the local and the domestic - but, with his deep fount of memory and erudite knowledge, each encounter evoking the span of Portugal's history, he is anyone's idea of a delightful travelling companion.

A Woman Rides the Beast: Roman Catholic Church and the Last Days

Description

Are you missing half the story about the last days? Virtually all attention these days is focused on the coming Antichrist but he is only half the story. Many people are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy a woman who rides the beast. Who is this woman? Tradition says she is connected with the church of Rome. But isn t such a view outdated? After all, today s Vatican is eager to join hands with Protestants worldwide. The Catholic church has changed is what we hear. Or has it? In A Woman Rides the Beast, prophecy expert Dave Hunt sifts through biblical truth and global events to present a well-defined portrait of the woman and her powerful place in the Antichrist s future empire. Eight remarkable clues in Revelation 17 and 18 prove the woman s identity beyond any reasonable doubt. A provocative account of what the Bible tells us is to come. "

"The book every student, colleague, and even rival theoretician has been waiting for. With characteristic wit, philosophical sophistication, scholarship, humanity, incisiveness, and creativity, Fonagy succinctly describes the links, differences, and future directions of his twin themes. [His book] is destined to take its place as one of a select list of essential psychology books of the decade." At the core of "Hebrew, "Complete Edition"" is the Living Language Method(TM), based on linguistic science, proven techniques, and over 65 years of experience. Our method teaches you the whole language, so you can express yourself, not just recite memorized words or scripts. Born into a Jewish ghetto in Hungary, as a child, Elie Wiesel was sent to the Nazi concentration camps at A Woman Rides the Beast: Roman Catholic Church and the Last Days free download pdf Auschwitz and Buchenwald. This is his account of that atrocity: the ever-increasing horrors he endured, the loss of his family and his struggle to survive in a world that stripped him of humanity, dignity and faith. Describing in simple terms the tragic murder of a people from a survivor's perspective, Night is among the most personal, intimate and poignant of all accounts of the Holocaust. A compelling consideration of the darkest side of human nature and the enduring power of hope, it remains one of the most important works of the twentieth century.

In Gallant Company

Description

The tenth Richard Bolitho novel in Alexander Kent's spectacularly successful series deals with Bolitho's life as a young lieutenant aboard the Trojan, an eighty-gun ship of the line. The year is 1777 when the revolution in America has erupted into a full-scale war. The navy's main task is to prevent military supplies from reaching Washington's armies and to destroy the fast-growing fleet of French and American privateers. As a junior officer Bolitho is often bewildered by swiftly changing events, but in a ship of the line, under a hard and determined captain, he has little opportunity for uncertainty. At a time of shortages and sudden death even a lieutenant can find himself faced with tasks and decisions more suitably given to officers of greater experience - and as the Trojan goes about her affairs the threat to Bolitho and his companions makes itself felt from New York to the Caribbean.

They are pirates, slum dwellers, computer hackers, dissidents, and Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches ebook pdf inner city gang members. Across the globe, diverse innovators are working in the black, grey, and informal economies to develop solutions to myriad challenges. Far from being "deviant entrepreneurs" that pose threats to our social and economic stability, these innovators display remarkable ingenuity, pioneering original methods and best practices that we can learn from and apply to formal markets in urgent need of change.

Professor Audre Lorde,Professor Cheryl Clarke: Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches

Description

Presenting the essential writings of black lesbian poet and feminist writer Audre Lorde, SISTER OUTSIDER celebrates an influential voice in twentieth-century literature. In this charged collection of fifteen essays and speeches, Lorde takes on sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia, and class, and propounds social difference as a vehicle for action and change. Her prose is incisive, unflinching, and lyrical, reflecting struggle but ultimately offering messages of hope. This commemorative edition includes a new foreword by Lorde scholar and poet Cheryl Clarke, who celebrates the ways in which Lorde's philosophies resonate more than twenty years after they were first published. These landmark writings are, in Lorde's own words, a call to never close our eyes to the terror, to the chaos which is Black which is creative which is female which is dark which is rejected which is messy which is. . . . Reviews..".it's been almost a quarter of a century since Audre Lorde's essays and speeches in Sister Outsider made an indelible mark on 20th-century literature. But the words of the black lesbian feminist poet seem as lyrical and unforgettable, and, sadly, as relevant today as when she first tackled everything from racism and homophobia to ageism and class dichotomies. A must-have book that every lesbian should read." Curve Editor's Pick Lorde was a brilliant feminist poet and intellectual whose theories on the power of embracing our internal contradictions as well as the differences between people and groups is the way to powerful coalition building and social progress. New York Post, Sunday Poet and librarian Lorde collected 15 of her finest essays and speeches in this 1984 volume. With her poet's command of language, she addresses sexism, racism, black women, black lesbians, eroticism, and more. Still powerful. Library Journal, Starred Review Audre Lorde is a passionate sage. I say is' and not was' because her keen insights continue to provoke and sustain us and give us courage. The reissue of this book is a gift to longtime admirers and to new readers who have yet to discover the power and grace and splendid audacity of Audre Lorde. Valerie Miner, author of After Eden and professor of feminist studies at Stanford University [Lorde's] works will be important to those truly interested in growing up sensitive, intelligent, and aware. Stephen J. Ball: Global Education Inc.: New Policy Networks and the Neoliberal Imaginary

Global Education Inc.: New Policy Networks and the Neoliberal Imaginary

Description

Do private and philanthropic solutions to the problems of education signal the end of state education in its 'welfare' form? Education policy is being reformed and re-worked on a global scale. Policies are flowing and converging to produce a singular vision of 'best practice' based on the methods and tenets of the 'neo-liberal imaginary'. Philanthropy, business and the governments are coming together in new networks and sites of policy outside of the framework of the nation state. This book is a first step in recording, mapping and making sense of the most important aspects of these new relations and dynamics of policy. Using the approach of 'policy sociology' and the methods of social network analysis, Global Education Inc. explores the policy activities of edu-businesses, neo-liberal advocacy networks and policy entrepreneurs, and of social enterprises and 'new' philanthropy. It also addresses the ways in which education and education policy itself are now being exported and bought and sold as profitable commodities and how entrenched problems of educational development and educational quality and access are now being addressed through 'market solutions'. That is, by the involvement of private providers in the delivery of educational services, both independently and on behalf of the state. Universities, schools and education services are being acquired as assets by private equity companies. Private storefront schools are being set-up by local entrepreneurs and through franchising arrangements, funded through microloans. School chains funded by philanthropy and run by multi-national edu-businesses are being harnessed to the attempts of developing societies in an attempt to achieve their Millennium Development Goals and provide mass access to basic education. Curriculum materials and pedagogy software and policy ideas such as inspections, leadership, school choice and accountability are being retailed by western 'knowledge companies' and consultants across the globe. This book argues that these new forms of policy and policy-making require new concepts and methods of policy analysis, with chapters including: * Networks, Neo-liberalism and Policy Mobilities * New' Philanthropy, Social Capitalism and Education Policy * Policy as Profit: Selling and Exporting Policy * Money, Meaning and Policy Connections Global Education Inc. is a crucial book that will be of great interest to students of social and education policy and social and education policy analysts and researchers.

"NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER Thomas Perry, for example, has Dr. Watson tell his tale, in a virtuoso work of alternate history that finds President McKinley approaching the sleuth with a disturbing request; Lee Child sends an FBI agent to investigate a crime near today s Baker Street only to get a twenty-first-century shock; Jacqueline Winspear spins Global Education Inc.: New Policy Networks and the Neoliberal Imaginary free pdf a story of a plucky boy inspired by the detective to make his own deductions; and graphic artist Colin Cotterill portrays his struggle to complete this assignment in his hilarious The Mysterious Case of the Unwritten Short Story. * Great title poem plus `Kubla Khan,` `Christabel,` 20 other sonnets, lyrics, odes: `Sonnet: To a Friend who asked how I felt when the Nurse first presented my Infant to me,` `Frost at Midnight,` `The Nightingale,` `The Pains of Sleep,` `To William Wordsworth,` `Youth and Age,` many more.
